Fish farming in Nyimbwa Sub county
Luwero District has embarked on a campaign to promote pond fish farming to fight unemployment among youths and women. The district targets to excavate over 20,000 fish ponds in the next two years under the campaign, which is supported by the Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries Ministry and Crane Bank.
Under the campaign, some farmers will also receive free cages to engage in cage fish farming on selected swamps. The farmers will also get free fish fingerlings through the Operation Wealth Creation Programme. Ronald Ndawula, the Luwero District LC 5 Chairperson, says they have already mobilized farmers to join the newly created Luwero Fish Farming Cooperative to receive support and advice.
Ndawula hopes the program will directly benefit about 60,000 people and address rampant unemployment in the district.
